If you are anything like me, the first word that comes to mind when you think of going to a botanical garden is… BORING! I like flowers, I think they are pretty, and I enjoy photographing flowers, but I am not “in to” flowers. I had plans to go hiking this morning with friends but when I woke up it was pouring rain. The back up plan in case of bad weather was to go to Asan Botanical Gardens. I wasn’t super thrilled with the idea but I figured even if I went and didn’t love it, I’d still have a better time hanging out with my friends than sitting at home doing laundry or something truly terrible like that! So I went to a botanical garden and it was… Lovely! From the outside the place doesn’t look like much but once you make your way through the main building you find that there are numerous greenhouses filled with beautiful plants and flowers. Some of the structures could use a fresh coat of paint but for the most part it’s quite pretty.
An aviary where for a few Won you can feed the parakeets. They have a coi pond and you can feed the fish as well.
In addition to birds and fish there were a couple of frisky cats roaming around. They seemed to enjoy chasing the hummingbird moths.
Wait you don’t know what a hummingbird moth is? Don’t worry I didn’t for the longest time either! lol They are cute little moths that fly like hummingbirds, very cool.
So it’s quite nice, but it gets better. Inside the main building there is a cafe and a really nice sitting area with big windows letting in all kinds of natural light. If I hadn’t been in a rush to get back home to meet my kids at the bus stop I definitely would have had a cup of coffee, sat for a while, and pet the cute pups that were hanging out.
If you aren’t like me, and you can actually keep a plant alive, they also have an area where you can purchase succulents and a few other types of flowers.
Of course if you buy new plants then you are totally going to need one of the adorable pots they sell to put them in! They have some large pots and then really cute smaller pots. I wanted to buy the little pots even though I can’t grow a flower to save my life. lol
Asan Botanical Garden, it isn’t the most amazing place I’ve ever been, but I think it’s a great place to head with friends during a chilly day or if you’re looking for something new to do while the kids are at school. Stroll around, drink some coffee, maybe do a little shopping. Yeah, it was a nice way to spend the morning, not boring at all. 🙂
